Practice
By now everybody already knows that becoming a good artist doesn't come from talent alone. On contrary; talent is a myth. Like the famous quote goes: "Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration". Meaning so much that even with a good idea and a bright mind, you still have to work your ass off in order to achieve something. While this makes mad skills available for basically everybody, I still hear many people complain about practice being a rather boring thing, or about them practicing a lot but still getting nowhere.
So I thought; Oh well... Why no article about practice?
Conscious vs unconscious practice
First of all lets divide practice in roughly two types. You have the conscious type of practice. This is the kind of practice in which you're sitting down and thinking to yourself "Hell yeah! I'm gonna draw some <subject> today to get better at this!". And then there's the unconscious type of practice. The type of practice that is often more playful an

Unique Character Design Tips
In my opinion, these are the most important factors in any character design: color, concept, shape, simplicity, cohesiveness, repeatability, personality and uniqueness.
Color: Any design with colors all over the place creates too many places for the eye to look. Keep your color design very simple and zen. Looking at the colors shouldn't be jarring or confusing. This isn't to say only use one color, not at all, but try to make sure the ones you use are harmonious. Avoid mixing and matching different saturations of the same color or picking colors that clash with one another.
My rule of thumb: Stick to no more than three base colors and some value variations.
Concept: Your design should have inspiration, even if the inspiration is just your intended character's personality or an interesting object that represents them. Your character could be a bookworm, and that would impact her posture, her clothing, her hairstyle...pretty much everything about her! You can design

PE: Telling Stories with your Art
Storytelling and art were good friends for thousands of years until they had a fight and split in the late 19th century. Paintings that told stories often followed old academic traditions and were rejected by modernist artists. In some ways, the old traditions could be limiting and did not allow free creativity. Because of this, storytelling, or “narrative” was knocked off it’s pedestal in fine art and though most ideas and movements of the past 50 years in art have come full circle, we still have a tenuous relationship with telling stories in our artwork. Concept has become incredibly important in fine art. I have nothing against concept art, in fact a lot of my own work is very concept driven, but I believe that narrative is not being given its due.
Once regarded as “lowbrow” comics and illustration are gaining respect in high art. Yet, beyond the “art world” images that tell stories are quickly becoming more relevant than even written word.
